What does Single malt mean? Single malt whisky is whiskey produced from one distillery and is only made from malted barley yeast and water. The term 'single' in single malt whisky refers to a spirit produced at one single distillery but does not mean that the spirit is produced from a single barrel or cask. Typically, single malt whiskey is a mixture of different malt, of varying ages, blended together in one distillery to get a consistent flavor.

Single malts are usually associated with Scotch single malt; however, single malt whiskeys are produced in various countries while Scotch single malt is produced in Scotland. To qualify to be labeled as a single malt Scotch whiskey, the spirit must be distilled at a single distillery in Scotland using a pot still distillation process and should be made from malted barley. It also must be matured in oak casks in Scotland for at least three years though most single malts are aged longer. The age stated on the single malt bottles usually state the youngest whiskey in the blend. I.e., a 15 year old single malt means the youngest whiskey is 15 years old but may contain much older malts. The aging casks can make a massive contribution to the finished whiskey flavor, depending on the time the whisky has been left to mature, since some whiskeys gets better with time.
While the Scotch whiskey is usually imitated internationally, the regulations governing the production of whiskeys marketed as "Scotch single malt" does not apply to whiskey produced elsewhere. There are different types of single malt whiskeys from different whiskey brands. Single grain, single barrel, and single cask are other terms used to describe whiskeys, usually their names defining their constituents. Although single malts are made from simple materials (malted barley, water, and yeast), the skilled and experienced blenders from individual distilleries apply their knowledge to make excellent whisky of distinct individual characters. Single malts carry with them the distinct character of a particular distillery from a specific region. The final product taste is affected by various factors from the water, fermentation time, barrel type and size, location, to the still size, and how they are operated. Master blenders have identified different whiskey styles coming from different regions, offering the consumers different tastes and flavors. Regional differences in the style of malt whiskeys have more to do with tradition on how malt is made in one place to another than terroir. The best single malt whiskey brands in Kenya and the world come from renowned whisky producing regions like Scotland, Japan, Canada and other popular places.
