Johnnie Walker is a very popular name in the whisky world and one of the most popular and best-selling blended Scotch whisky brand in Kenya and globally. Johnnie Walker whiskey brand was founded by a grocer - John Walker. It has its origin in Kilmarnock town, Ayrshire, in Scotland, and it is today owned by Diageo. In 1820 as a teenager, Walker managed a grocery, wine, and spirits shop when the idea of selecting malts with different characters and bringing them together to create a whisky with a single taste came up. This gave birth to the art of blending. Walker switched to dealing mainly in whisky, making a single taste whiskey with increased richness and balance. By then, the blending of grain and malt whiskies was banned, and John walker sold the blended malt whiskey and grain whisky. He did not have a brand of his own, so he sold his whiskies as made to order, crafted according to the customers' requirements. Later on, Walker started selling his blended malt whisky as Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky, using his name on labels.
John Walker died in 1857, and his son Alexander Walker (Alec) take over the business. He took the business to a higher height, making Johnnie Walker whiskey brands one of the most popular whiskies in the world. The blending of malt whisky with grain whiskey was legalized in 1860, giving way for the modern scotch blended whiskies. This led to the production of light and sweeter blended Scotch whiskey, which were more acceptable to a broader audience. At this time, Alexander Walker introduced the signature square bottle of Johnnie Walker whisky brands and angled stickers that give it an edge over the competitors. The arrival of a railway line in Kilmarnock favored Walker whiskey, helping him distribute his brand to a wide market in the world. Alexander created the first commercial blend of Johnnie Walker whisky in 1865 and called it Old Highland Whisky.
To expand the business and reinforce the stocks of the Johnnie Walker blends' key malt whiskies, Alec bought Cardhu distillery in 1893. The Cardhu single malt whisky was taken out of the market, giving Walker an exclusive presence. This formed the base for the Walkers the Old Highland Whisky and, subsequent rebranding in 1909, to the famous single malt whiskies of Johnnie Walker Red Label and Black Label. As part of a rebranding, the Striding Man logo was introduced, giving the Walker whiskeys unique visibility and rebranded their blends to match the color names.
