Smirnoff is one of the most popular vodka brand and among the best-selling spirit brand in the world. Smirnoff vodka brands are owned and produced by Diageo Company. Smirnoff brand was founded by Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov (1831–1898), establishing vodka distillery in Russia, Moscow, in 1864 and named it PA Smirnoff. Smirnoff distillation started in Russia, but today is produced in other countries like Brazil, India, Italy, Mongolia, the UK, the US, and others. It is also widely distributed around the world to over 130 countries. Pyotr pioneered the traditional charcoal filtration used in making Smirnoff vodka. Smirnoff distillery produces products that include malt beverages, vodka, and flavored vodka. By 1886 Smirnoff had a two-third market share in Moscow and was Tsar's favorite brand. It was so popular with the Russian army that it even led the officer mess to be called the Smirnoff club. Vladimir Smirnov, the third son of Pyotr, succeeded his father after his death. He speared the company to more success increase yearly output and created the Smirnoff recipe No. 21 after escaping Russia.
Tsar nationalized the Russian vodka industry in 1904, and Vladimir Smirnov was forced to sell the Smirnoff brand and the distillery. The Smirnov family fled Russia in 1917 during the revolution to Istanbul, then Constantinople, where Vladimir Smirnov re-established the distillery in 1920. After four years, he relocated to Ukraine, where he started selling brand under the contemporary French "Smirnoff" spelling. A year later, another distillery was established in Paris. The new brand was marginally doing well, but it was a shadow of its former self. In the 1930s, Vladimir met a successful Russian businessman, Rudolph Kunett, who had immigrated to America during the revolution. Kunett was supplying grains to Smirnoff distillery in Russia before the revolution. Vladimir sold Kunett the right to produced Smirnoff vodka in 1933. Kunett returned to the US and established his distillery in North America. The business was not successful, and Kunett sold the company in 1939 to Heublein Company that specialized in import and export liquor and foreign foods. Whiskey was the favorite drink for American, and to market Smirnoff in the American market, it was rebranded as "white whiskey with no taste, no smell" and used the whiskey cork, which helped to improve its sales. Later on, Heublein purchased Grand Metropolitan IDV Smirnoff licensee which in 1997 merged with Guinness to form Diageo group.
One of Pyotr Smirnov's descendants re-started producing Smirnoff vodka in Russia in the 1990s, claiming it to be "The Only Real Smirnov." It was involved in several lawsuits, after which Smirnoff successfully reclaimed its trademark. Diageo group completed a joint venture deal with the Smirnov Company in 2006. It introduced a series of new Smirnoff products onto the UK market and later on in Europe and North America becoming the most popular spirit, especially within the club scene.
