About Sweet Red Wines
Wine is one of the best drinks, full of complexity and diversity. From red wine, white wine, sparkling wine, rose wine to fortified wine it is quite delicious and has something for everyone. Red wine is one of the most loved and popular wine brands. Red wine can be either sweet or dry.
Characteristics of Red Sweet Wines
Red sweet wines differ from their dry red wine cousins on the residual sugar levels. Red sweet wine has high residual sugar content, and low tannins compared to the full tannic flavors of traditional red wines. Also, these wines are usually low in alcohol apart from port wine that has high alcohol content. Higher residual sugar content and lower tannins make this wine easy to drink. Sweet red wines can be classified as fortified wine, sparkling wine, or still wine.
Sweet red wine types are fruity, flavorful, and complex, but their true mark of sweetness is the residual sugar level that sets them apart from the usual dry red wine. Sweet red wines are a great choice for wine beginners, as well for the white wine drinker who wants to shift to red wine.
How are Sweet Red Wines Made?
Interrupting the fermentation. The fermentation process is stopped early to allow more of the grape sugar to remain in the finished product, hence attaining a sweeter wine. The yeast is removed by a fine filtration process, to ensure no yeast remains and just a little grape sugar is left in the juice. In some cases of fortified wines, the fermentation process is interrupted by adding spirit. The spirit kills the yeast, leaving behind residual sugar.
Freezing the Grapes. In this process, the grape is frozen while still on the vine. Water in the fruit freeze, while the sugar does not. Freezing the grapes allows a more concentrated grape juice to develop. The grapes are pressed while frozen, and then fermentation begins resulting in a concentrated and very sweet wine.
Adding sweet ingredients. In this process, sweet ingredients are added to the grape juice to attain the desired wine sweetness.
