What is Malbec?

Malbec is a full-bodied red dry wine. Although this grape variety is indigenous to France, it has grown in popularity in Argentina. In France, Malbec is mostly used as a blending grape.

Argentine Malbec

Malbec from Argentina is the most popular and best-selling in Kenya.

The cultivation of Malbec in Argentina came to be over 100 years ago when Argentine winemakers wanted to improve the quality of their wine. So they consulted Michel Pouget, a French agronomist, who recommended Malbec. His recommendations inspired the winemakers to cultivate the grapes throughout Argentina. The hot climate and high altitude made the vines thrive more than they did in France.

For many years, Malbec became the most consumed wine in Argentina. Quality improved with the advancement of winemaking techniques and the Argentine Malbec spread widely across the globe. Most people embraced its approachable profile and its affordable prices.

French Malbec

Malbec in France is used in red blends, although some winemakers produce varietal Malbecs. The popular Bordeaux blends contain Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in higher percentages, but still, Malbec is one of the four allowable additional grape varieties in these blends. However, it will only make less than 2% of the blend.

The South West of Cahors in France is the only area that makes varietal Malbec wines, although the appellation regulation also allows up to 30% Merlot or Tannat blends.

NB: Malbec is not exclusively produced in France and Argentina only. Other regions like the United States and Chile also produce varietal Malbecs or blends.

What’s the Difference Between Argentine Malbec and French Malbec?

1. Argentine Malbec is mostly available as varietal wine, while most French Malbec is available in blends (apart from Malbec from Cahors).
2. Argentine Malbec is fruit forward with blackberry, black cherry, and plum notes, while French Malbec (from Cahors) is leathery with notes of tart currants, savory bitterness, and black plum.
3. French Malbec has moderate acidity, lower tannins, and lower alcohol than Argentine Malbec and ages longer.

• Full-bodied with a deep purple color.
• Higher alcohol content than Pinot Noir or Merlot with up to 15% ABV.
• Grapes are small and dark with thick skins.
• Fruity, spicy, savory flavors
• Generally affordable, especially the Argentine Malbec.

Like many red wines, Malbec pairs perfectly with red meat, preferably leaner cuts of beef, turkey, and surprisingly, ostrich (if you are bold enough). Herbs and spices in seasoning blends highlight its fruity character, intensifying the flavors.
